Chapter eighteen

Rayne

My heart was pounding as I walked down the hallway. I just needed to sit somewhere quiet for a few minutes, regain my composure, and then I would be ready to face the rest of the night. I walked into the restroom and wet one of the paper towels, gently blotting it on my face. Nothing bad had happened yet, but the night was still young.

Why was Trace here? Sure, Trace had connections to money, but it wasn’t like he had any. Not any he had earned himself, at least. Why was he looking for me? The last time he’d found me by myself, he attempted to feel me up in Oliver’s kitchen. My skin crawled at the memory.

The guys would never let him lay a finger on me, and surely he wouldn’t have the audacity to try anything in front of so many people. I looked in the mirror one last time and plastered on a smile. Never let them see you look weak, I reminded myself. I walked out of the bathroom door into the darkness and a hand clamped tightly over my mouth.

“Even if you scream, they’ll never hear you. Not back here,” a familiar voice said in my ear. Hot breath feathered against my skin and my breathing stuttered. Of course, he would try something here. Why had I tried to convince myself otherwise? His other arm flew around my waist as he held me against him. He started dragging me back down the hallway, further from my guys. I tried to kick at him and swing my elbows, but every blow that landed only seemed to feed his determination.

“You’re not getting away tonight,” he chuckled as I fought him as fiercely as I could. Dread washed over me and bile threatened to rise in my throat. I tried to scream, but the roar of people chattering and the hum of music only served to further muffle my screams. I bit at the hand over my mouth. My teeth pierced the sensitive flesh of his palm as the taste of copper flooded my mouth. He grunted from the sudden pain I’d inflicted on him, but his grip didn’t loosen even as I flailed my limbs against him.

“That’s right, fight against me, Rayne. You know how much I like that,” he said as he released my mouth and opened a door, throwing me inside. My body hit the marble floor with a thud, my ankle awkwardly twisting underneath. I stifled the noise in my throat that threatened to escape. Panic welled inside of me as I tried to look around the dimly lit room.

The only way out was blocked by Trace’s enormous frame. The shadows cast across his face seemed to solidify the menacing look he shot me. I should have allowed Ethan to accompany me to the restroom, but I was desperate to step away from Libby and Ayers. Next time I’m forced to attend a dumb social event, I am going to demand they buy me a knife holster that will fit under my dress.
